Export of frozen squid increased by 500% in the period January-August 2009

The frozen squid exports totaled 9.8 million dollars between January and August this year, which meant an increase of 500 percent over the same period last year, reported the consultancy Maximixe.
This increase is explained by resource availability as well as increased purchases by Venezuela (more than 1,600 percent growth), Italy (1.278 percent), United States (332 percent) and Spain (302 percent) .
Also influenced by the incursion into new markets such as Brazil where shipments generated $ 90.600, Greece (74,000 dollars), Hong Kong ($ 73.300) and Uruguay ($ 42.800).
While the amounts of exports to new destinations are still small, Maximixe expected to assume greater importance in line with increased consumption of healthy products and quick and easy preparation.
He said that another important fact is that in the period January-August average export price of frozen squid was $ 1.852 per metric ton (MT), representing 9.8 percent less than in the similar period of 2008.
However, it is noted that in recent months the price is higher, since last August reached $ 2.853 per MT due to increased product demand and shortages of Argentine squid (Illex argentinus).
